When the Dust Settles

When a storm settles, another storm rolls in. The tempest of roofing repairs may not be fatal, but it can be costly. Roof leaks, high wind damage, fallen trees, and ripped off siding are all typical post-hurricane repairs that must be made.

It’s important that you have a thorough inspection lined up by a professional. It’s difficult for civilians to make a clear cut assessment of home damage. Just because it’s not leaking, doesn’t mean your roof is safe from collapsing into the house.

Here are 3 of the most common post-hurricane repairs to look out for.

1) Missing, Damaged or Uplifted/Shifted or Tiles

Roofs take quite a beating during high sustained winds. A common problem is when asphalt shingles are blown off by flying debris, making your home prone to roof leaks. Hail is another form of roof killer that your inspector will want to keep an eye out for, along with giving a thorough examination of exhaust pipes, valleys, outer edges and chimney flashing pieces.

2) Roof Leaks

Our homes may already have imperfections and cracks. It’s a hurricane that swoops in and exploits those imperfections. This is how leaks happen and why it’s so crucial to inspect your attic and roof before the storm has even landed. A tell-tale sign is that of stains on the ceiling or walls. Your roofer will also have a sixth sense and high alert radar for these cracks, imperfections and stains.

3) Clogged Gutters and Downspouts

Debris is an awful awful thing and when it gathers, it can clog your gutters. Twigs, branches, leaves and building material all gather together to damage your shingles and cause malfunctioning downspouts. This accumulation of muck can create a dam that once broken, can release the Kraken of filth and water into your home. Installing a gutter guard can prevent this accumulation of muck from occurring.

Dealing with a storm can be a little less stressful if you make the necessary preparations. Treat your roof with love and it will return that love with durability and no leaks.
